Traffic rules and regulations are formulated to regulate traffic, for the safety and convenience of all types of road users. It plays a very important role in the traffic system of a country. They are very essential to ensure the safety of various road users and as well as their easy commuting. These rules are made for avoiding traffic jams and accidents in cities and towns. The rules are formulated to minimize accidents, injuries, and jams.

Generally, traffic rules are implemented by showing different colored light signals in the road like red light, yellow light, and green light. The traffic rules and regulations are designed in such a way so that they ensure the safety of all the commuters. Traffic rules are formulated after observing the daily accident data and the problems faced by the public. Some rules are formulated for specific types of users, while some are common. Driving on the left side of the road, using foot over bridge, following traffic signs, not to blow horns before a hospital or a school, etc are also included in the traffic rules. A rule like “keep left” is meant to give a pass to vehicles coming from the opposite direction, as well as to other vehicles approaching from behind and traveling in the same direction. A rule mandating a slow down while approaching a zebra crossing is meant for the safety of pedestrians.

There are traffic polices to supervise the rules. Wearing a helmet while riding a bike or bicycle is meant for the safety of the rider. Likewise, there are many rules like wearing seat belts while driving, driving within the limited speed, no drunken driving, etc. Traffic rules like speed limitation, driving on a particular lane and side of the road, traffic signals, etc. must be followed during driving. There are many initiatives that could be taken to increase public awareness. Traffic rules are not made by the government for earning money out of them. They are essential for the smooth and efficient functioning of the nation. An organized structure for providing education regarding road safety and rules, in the schools must be provided. Knowledge of traffic signs is necessary. Road safety and rules could be started as a subject in schools and professional courses. The use of print and electronic media could also be a vital tool in raising awareness. Traffic Rules teach us to become good and accountable citizens of the motherland. A mandatory training session for are new driving license holders, on road safety and rules too will help in raising awareness. Above all, everybody should obey traffic rules and the causes of traffic jams should be eradicated.
