Anterior relations

From medial to lateral:

i) Sympathetic chain.

ii) First posterior intercostal vein.

iii) Superior intercostal artery.

iv) First thoracic nerve.

Superior relations

i) Deep cervical vessels.

ii) The eighth cervical nerve.

Joints formed by the 1st rib:

  1. First costochondral joint.
  2. First costovertebral joint (the head of the 1st rib articulates with the body of vertebra Tl).
  3. First costotransverse joint (Tubercle of the 1st rib articulates with the transverse process of vertebra T1).
