(a) Menarche: Menarche means the onset of the menstrual cycle. It is the occurrence of a first menstrual period in the female adolescent. It occurs at about 12 to 14 years. Menarche signals maturation of the adolescent female body and is commonly associated with the ability to ovulate and reproduce.

(b) Menopause: Menopause means cessation of the menstrual cycle in a female. It is occurs at between the ages of 45 to 55 years. A woman knows that she’s incoming menopause if she experiences hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, uneven libido, and temper swings, symptoms that can sometimes be alleviated by hormone surrogate therapy.

(c) Amenorrhoea: It means an absence of menstruation. It refers to the absence of a woman’s menstrual period while she is in her reproductive years. The most regular cause of amenorrhea is pregnancy. Other causes include problems with the reproductive organs or with the glands that help control hormone levels. It occurs during –

  • Before puberty,
  • After menopause,
  • during pregnancy,
  • Sometime during lactation.
