Safe Period is the period of the menstrual cycle during which chance of pregnancy is least though frequent coitus due to the absence of ovum. Safe period is from day 1 to 7 and day 21 to the rest of the cycle when you can have sex without worrying about getting pregnant.

Calculation of safe period: When cycle is 28 ± 2 days, the safe period comprises:

(i) 4 days of menstrual flow,

(ii) 3 days of post menstrually,

(iii) 9 days premenstrually.

The average menstrual cycle is 28 days or a little less, but if your cycle is longer than 28 days, the safe period is not reliable. The menstrual cycle is usually divided into three phases: the follicular phase (pre-ovulatory phase), ovulation, and the luteal phase (post-ovulatory phase). The length of each phase varies from woman to woman and cycle to cycle, though the average menstrual cycle is 28 days.

Merits:

  • It is a simple and traditional method,
  • There is no religious barrier.

Demerits: Always it is not safe except regular cycle.
