Indication of Blood Transfusion

Blood transfusion is a medical treatment that replaces blood lost through injury, surgery, or disease. It is the transfer of blood or blood products from one person (donor) into another person’s bloodstream (recipient). The blood goes through a tube from a bag to an intravenous catheter and into your vein. It’s a very safe procedure that can be life-saving.

Indication of Blood Transfusion

  • Severe blood loss due to trauma or Acute haemorrhage.
  • Severe Burn
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Leukemia
  • CO poisoning
  • Erythroblastosis fetalis
  • Preoperative, perforative and postoperative management of pt.
  • Thalassemia.
  • To supply certain blood fraction for certain clinical conditions.


  • Packed Red cells are transfused to Patients with chronic anaemia.
  • Platelets in thrombocytopenia.
  • Factor VIII in Haemophilia.

Blood has several components, including:

  • Red cells carry oxygen and help remove waste products
  • White cells help your body fight infections
  • Plasma is the liquid part of your blood
  • Platelets help your blood clot properly

If you have an illness in which your bone marrow doesn’t make enough blood, such as aplastic anemia, you may need transfusions.
