Importance of Endocrine System

The endocrine system is the anthology of glands that create hormones that control metabolism, growth and development, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood etc. The functions of the body are regulated by 2 major control systems –

In general, the endocrine system is concerned principally with control of different metabolic functions of the body. These glands secrete hormones to regulate many bodily functions, including growth and metabolism. Endocrine diseases are common and usually occur when glands produce an incorrect amount of hormones.

Eight major endocrine glands located in various parts of body secret chemical substances called hormone. Hormones are transported to help regulate cellular functions.

For example –

  • Thyroid hormone increases the rates of most chemical reactions in all cells,
  • Insulin controls glucose metabolism,
  • Adrenocortical hormones control Na+, K+ and protein metabolism,
  • PTH controls bone calcium and PO43-

Thus, the hormones are a system of regulations that complement the nervous system.

In our body, there is an irregular nutrient, minerals and water fluxes as well as physical alterations in the environment. Secretion of hormone is evoked by a specific change in the internal environment. And as a result of hormones subsequent action on its target cells, the change is counteracted and chemical or physical homeostasis (the desired status ques.) is restored. Without the endocrine system, we could not live, since we could not digest or absorb food, could not detoxify our bodies.

Thus the importance of endocrine system lies in –

(i) Maintenance of internal environment of the body,

(ii) Regulation of metabolic function of the body.
