Bile is a secretory product of liver made up of salt, pigment and other substances, dissolved in an alkaline solution which is stored in Gallbladder. It is a sticky fluid produced in the liver, stored in the gallbladder and delivered into the intestine, where it aids in the digestion of fat.

Function of Bile

Digestive function: Bile salt helps in digestion of fat with the help of Bile salt by –

  • reducing surface tension
  • activating the action of lipase.
  • solvent action – no enzyme acts on aqueous solution.

Fug: Functions of Bile

Absorptive function: It helps in absorption of fat and fat-soluble substance like iron, Ca and Vit A, D, K, and E.

Choleretic Action: Increase secretion of bile from the liver.

Laxative function: Bile salt helps in defecation by increasing peristalsis.

Buffering function: Mucin of bile acts buffer and lubricant.

Excretory functions – Heavy metals like Cu, Zn, Hg, Ag etc.

  • Pigment – Bilirubin.
