Duodenal Cap

It is a triangular redio-opaque shadow which may be observed in the 1st part of duodenum after barium meal. This may be distorted in peptic ulcer or in malignant growth of duodenum. It is the first section of the duodenum, or the part of the small intestine within the jejunum and the stomach, as seen in a radiograph or by fluoroscopy.

Function – The structure maintains the motility of the stomach.

Disorders – This is a common site for duodenal ulcers. This is because the duodenal mucosa is exposed to the acidic chyme in this area, before mixing with alkaline secretions from the duodenum.
