Bile is a fluid product in the liver and stored in the gallbladder that helps digest food. The biliary tract includes the gallbladder and bile ducts inside and outside the liver. The biliary system consists of the organs and ducts (bile ducts, gallbladder, and associated structures) that are involved in the production and transportation of bile.

Pathway of bile:

  • Bile form in the liver by the hepatic cells,
  • Bile canaliculi,
  • Intralobular bile ductules,
  • Interlobular hepatic ductules,
  • Right and left hepatic duct,
  • Common hepatic duct,
  • Cystic duct
  • Gallbladder,
  • Cystic duct,
  • Bile duct (Common),
  • Hepato-pancreatic ampullae,
  • 2nd part of the duodenum.

Functions –

  • To drain waste products from the liver into the duodenum
  • To help in digestion with the controlled release of bile
