Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It is mainly used to help women produce milk after childbirth. When women are pregnant or have just given birth, their prolactin levels amplify so they can make breast milk. However, it’s levels have been used to determine sexual pleasure in both men and women.

The action of prolactin –

Female:

  • It controls the production of milk,
  • Initiation of lactation after estrogen and progesterone priming,
  • Inhibition of gonadotropic action on the ovary,
  • Prevents ovulation in lactating women,
  • Breast development during pregnancy,
  • Maintenance of maternal behaviors.

Control of Prolactin secretion:

  • Stimulation of secretion –

Pregnancy, Estrogen, Nursing-Breast manipulation, Sleep, Stress etc.

  • Inhibition of secretion –

Dopamine, Somatostatin, Dopaminergic agonists, GABA etc.
