Functions of Pancreatic Juice

It is a juice that contains multiple types of enzymes for all type of food digestion. The pancreas makes pancreatic juices and hormones. It contains enzymes that help digest food in the small intestine. The release of these hormones into the blood is stimulated by the entry of the acidic chyme into the duodenum.

Functions of pancreatic juice

(1) Digestive functions: Pancreatic juice digests all type of food (protein, CHO, and Fat) due to the presence of high conc. of different enzymes.

Amylolytic activity: Pancreatic amylase acts both on boiled and unboiled starch, glycogen and most other CHO except cellulose to form disaccharides (maltose, isomaltose, maltotriose) and few trisaccharides.

Lipolytic activity: Pancreatic lipase spilled fat into fatty acid and triglyceride with the help of bile salt in alkaline media.

Proteolytic activity:

  • Protein → (trypsin) → Peptone
  • Peptone → (chymotrypsin) → Polypeptide
  • Polypeptide → (Carboxypolypeptidase) → Amino Acid
  • DNA → (DNAase) → Nucleotides
  • RNAase → (RNAase) → Nucleotides.

(2) Neutralizing action

A large amount of pancreatic juice neutralizes the acidities of gastric chyme and maintain optimum pH for enzymatic activity.

HCl + NaHCO3 → NaCl + H2CO3

H2CO3 → H2O + CO2.
