Blood Coagulation Tests

Blood coagulation refers to the process of forming a clot to stop bleeding. Clotting disorders can cause a dangerous amount of bleeding or clotting. Coagulation tests are useful in monitoring people who take medications that affect clotting ability. Coagulation tests are also sometimes recommended before surgery.

Blood Coagulation test

  • Bleeding time (BT)
  • Clotting time (CT)
  • Prothrombin time (PT)
  • Thromboplastin generation time.

Bleeding time: Time required stopping bleeding only by the formation of the platelet plug. This test analyzes how quickly small blood vessels in your skin close up and stop bleeding. Normal bleeding time: 1- 6 min.

Clotting time: Time required for coagulation of blood. Normal range: 1 – 10 min.

Prothrombin time: Time required for coagulation to take place. These test measures how well and how long it takes your blood to clot. Normal value: About 12 seconds.

Thromboplastin generation time: 30 – 40 second.
