The modern definition of organic chemistry is — organic chemistry is the chemistry of compounds of carbon. So, the branch of chemistry which deals with hydrocarbons and their derivatives is known as organic chemistry. This branch deals with the—

  • Preparation, isolation, purification and
  • Characterization i.e. elucidation of the structures
  • Study of the properties (reactions, mechanism, isomerism etc.)
  • Study of uses of organic compounds.

It has several branches — namely

  • Organic chemistry dealing with preparation, properties, reaction
    mechanism, uses of organic compounds
  • Natural products chemistry—dealing with isolation, purification, synthesis of compounds from natural source e.g. plants, animals etc.
  • Stereochemistry dealing with the three dimensional aspect of organic molecules
  • Organic spectroscopy dealing the structure elucidation by spectroscopic methods (UV, IR NMR mass etc.)
  • Molecular modeling and synthetic organic chemistry

The diversity of carbon compounds needs a separate branch of chemistry—Organic chemistry.
