Uses of Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4)

Sulphuric acid is called the king of chemicals. It is the most important industrial chemical. Some major uses of sulphuric acid are,

  • For the manufacture of fertilizers, ammonium sulphate and superphosphate.
  • In the manufacture of other important industrial chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulphates of metals, alums, sodium carbonate, etc.
  • In the preparation of dyes, drugs and disinfectants.
  • In metallurgical processes for the purification of metals by electrolysis where sulphuric acid is commonly used in the bath.
  • In preparing paints and pigments. Many of the pigments used in paints are sulphates, e.g., barium and lead sulphates.
  • In the manufacture of explosives such as nitroglycerine, gun cotton, T.N.T., etc.
  • In textile, paper industry and leather industry for tanning.
  • As a dehydrating agent and as a laboratory reagent.
