Power Responsibility Equation

Power is simply the extent of capability to control others so that they will do what they are wanted to do. The English word ‘Power’ came from French word ‘Poer’ which means to be able. . Responsibility indicated the duty assigned to a position. Responsibility means the obligation to carry out duties and achieve goals related to a position. There are some point is discussed by power responsibility that is given bellow:-

(a) Social power: Businessmen today have too much social power. These powers are influence the business community that influence is called social power. It is a basis of common elements in politics, economics, and all other social relationship. It is the ability to achieve goals even if other people oppose those goals.

(b) Social responsibility goes with social power: Social responsibility and social power are closely related with each other. That responsibility and power go hand in hand appears to be as old as civilization in self social responsibility of businessmen arises from the amount of social power they have.

(c) Objection to a balance of power and responsibility: This zero equation of no power and no responsibility is a power theoretical model for pure competition but it is theory only and is inconsistent with the power realities of modern organization.

(d) Iron law of responsibility: This is the iron law of responsibility in the long run, those who do not use power in a manner which society considers responsible. Will tend to lose it.

(e) Balancing power and responsibility: It social responsibility of businessmen needs to reflect. Their social power then in a general way in the specific operating areas where there is power responsibility will also resides and the amount of responsibility with approximate the amount of power.

(f) Corporate constitutionalism: Constitutionalism is used to balance the power and responsibility equation. It is not destroy power but rather it defines conditions for responsible use of power. Its dual purpose is to channel organizational power in supportive ways and to protect other interests against unreasonable organizational power.
