Management information system is an organized combination of people hardware, software, communication network and data resources that collect transforms and disseminates information in an organization. In business, these systems are tools used to support processes, operations, intelligence, and IT.

Decision support system is an information system that utilizes a decision model, a database and decision makers own insights in an add hoer, an interactive analytical process to reach a specific decision by specification decision maker.

Distinguish between MIS and DSS are as follows –

Management Information System (MIS)

  • Definition: Management information system is an organized combination of people hardware, software, communication network and data resources that collect transforms and disseminates information in an organization.
  • Decision support provided: Provide information about the performance of the organization.
  • Information form and frequency: Periodic, exception demand, and push reports and responses.
  • Information format: Pre-specified, fixed for the rate.

Decision Support system (DSS)

  • Definition: Decision support system is an information system that utilizes decision model, a database and decision makers own insights in an add hoer, an interactive analytical process to reach a specific decision by specification decision maker.
  • Decision support provided: Provide information and Decision support techniques to analyze specific problems or opportunities.
  • Information form and frequency: Interactive inquiries and responses.
  • Information format: Ad hoc, flexible and adaptable format.
  • Information process methodology: Information produced by analytical modeling of business data.
